CAS Hanwei Viking Throwing Spear Head

Viking throwing spearhead with a niello-like effect finish showcases the innovative blend of art and war for the Vikings, who often adorned their weapons with intricate patterns using the "niello" process. This process involved mixing an alloy of several metals, including silver, with sulfur, which was then rubbed into an incised pattern and fired. This resulted in a black design when rubbed into the engraving, while the remaining surface was polished to a shiny finish. While our decorating process at Hanwei involves a little less alchemy, it still creates a lustrous, long-lasting niello-like effect.

The spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1 inch and a total head length of 16 1/4 inches. The blade itself measures 9 3/4 inches. The Nordic warrior commonly carried multiple lightweight throwing spears into battle. These spears were designed with narrow, sharply pointed heads to pierce mail. During a charge, the warrior would carry several spears in the shield hand and throw them as the distance closed, allowing them to then use their sword or axe in hand-to-hand combat.

It is important to note that this spearhead is cast hollow and therefore not suitable for functional use. Only spearheads are supplied, and they showcase the artistry and craftsmanship of the Viking warriors. The use of a niello-like finish provides a visually stunning and historically accurate portrayal of Viking weaponry. The spearhead is made of steel, ensuring its durability and authenticity.
